Ikea is a privately-held Swedish company that offers a wide range of home furnishings. They offer an extensive line
of appliances and kitchen tools, including cabinets. Ikea sells kitchen cabinets in two basic designs: free-standing
and built-in.
There are three lines of free-standing kitchen cabinets: Bravad and Varde (designed by Mikael Warnhammar), and Udden
(designed by Ehln Johansson).
The built-in line, called Akurum, includes base cabinets (which stand on the floor), wall cabinets (which attach to
the wall and include features such as spaces for microwaves, glass doors and corner cabinets), and tall cabinets
(which reach from floor to ceiling). All units are modular, and can be mixed and matched into a wide array of
configurations.
History
Ikea was founded in 1943 by Ingvar Kamprad; however, Ikea didn’t begin building and selling furniture until 1948.
The first Ikea catalog was distributed in 1951.
